Pasteurized juice is readily available commercially, but juice made at home is generally not pasteurized and can pose a risk of contamination with dangerous bacteria. If you choose to make your own juice, follow safety steps such as:
- Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after preparation.
- Thoroughly wash all produce (bought and grown at home) under running water before cutting or cooking.
- Use a clean produce brush to scrub firm produce (such as cucumbers and melon), even if you plan to peel it.
- Dry produce with a clean cloth or paper towel after washing.
