My Friend Ran the NYC Marathon in These Hoka Sneakers

I’ll never cease to be amazed by my friend. Upon learning that she would have to get a double mastectomy, she signed up for the TCS New York City Marathon. It was a brave and intelligent move that not only distracted her from the looming surgery, but also ensured her body was in peak physical condition to aid in her recovery.

After a year of long runs, early bedtimes and a lot of stretching, she crossed the finish line to the cheers of dozens of friends and family members. One week later, she got the surgery. One year later, she’s running again in the updated version of the same sneaker that got her through marathon training “without pain” and the interminable months of reacquainting herself with her new body: the Hoka Clifton 10

When she started her marathon journey, she sought out a supportive sneaker with plenty of cushion to keep her feet from feeling the impact of hitting the pavement time and again. After speaking with an expert at a shoe store, she landed on Hoka’s beloved Clifton line. A favorite of runners and walkers alike, this shoe has been one of the brand’s most popular styles since its introduction 10 years ago.

Its popularity is undoubtedly due to its plush sole, lightweight feel and breathable upper. Combined, these disparate elements create a sneaker that my friend described as a “game-changer” when she was “running that far multiple times a week.” She also added that she didn’t get shin splints while wearing the Cliftons; a notable feat since this problem had plagued her all her life.

While she loved the earlier version of the Clifton, my friend is even more impressed by the “cloud-like” construction of the 10. This iteration scored the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Acceptance for its wide toe box, additional 3 millimeters in heel-to-toe drop, cushioned foam midsole, durable outsole and supportive interior technology that keeps her feet properly aligned. Not to mention that the Clifton 10 is also available in 19 colors, three of which are on sale.

While my friend has no plans to run another marathon right now, she still laces up her Hoka Cliftons daily for shorter, more sustainable runs and walks. “They’re perfect for me,” she said. “I see myself wearing this line for years to come.”
