- Zooey Deschanel says a Costco trail mix was a hit on the New Girl set.
- The Kirkland trail mix includes M&Ms, raisins and mixed nuts.
- Her favorite snacks often include peanut butter and baby carrots.
Zooey Deschanel is having a moment. While she’s best known for acting roles in films and series like New Girl and 500 Days of Summer, she’s also a talented singer-songwriter. Recently, her 2008 song, “I Thought I Saw Your Face Today,” written for her band She & Him, became a trending sound on TikTok.
This past December, Deschanel appeared on the That’s So True podcast with comedian Caleb Hearon. The two are co-starring in Hearon’s upcoming film Trash Mountain, which Deschanel is also executive producing.
The podcast made one thing clear—Zooey Deschanel loves to snack. In fact, “Zooey Deschanel Loves to Snack” is the title of the episode. “I love a snackie,” she joked in the episode.
Starring as the bubbly teacher Jessica Day in New Girl for seven seasons, Deschanel told Hearon that there’s one particular snack that had a grip on the cast. The best part is? You can get it at Costco.
“On New Girl, we had this trail mix they would put out and the first year—I think it was Kirkland Signature or something—we were all like, ‘Oh my God, this trail mix is so good.’… Everyone was addicted to the trail mix,” she shared.
Deschanel mentioned the trail mix had M&Ms and raisins, giving us just enough detail to track it down. The trail mix in question appears to be the Kirkland Signature Trail Mix, which is available at Costco in snack packs or in a 4-pound bag. It includes a mixture of peanuts, peanut M&Ms, milk chocolate M&Ms, raisins, almonds and cashews.
We’re starting to see a pattern here. Last year, Deschanel spoke to EatingWell about her snacking habits, revealing that she loves having apple with peanut butter. “I just think it’s the best snack. I haven’t had one person that doesn’t really agree with me once they start doing this snack, and it’s a classic,” she said. In addition to this peanut-based trail mix and the aforementioned apple and peanut butter combo, Deschanel previously shared her peanut butter overnight oat recipe on The Drew Barrymore Show, and we definitely relate to her love for nuts.
But even with the best snacks, eating the same thing every day can get tiring. After seven seasons of craft services putting out the same trail mix, the cast got sick of it. “I can’t believe I became immune to this incredible trail mix,” Deschanel said.
As for her favorite snacks nowadays? According to Hearon, most of the time, Deschanel is “taking down baby carrots dipped in cottage cheese.”
“That’s my big snack. Everyone needs to know it’s a good snack,” Deschanel confirmed. “If you put ranch powder on it? Come on, that’s delicious. It’s really good.” We love the idea and would take it one step further, blending the cottage cheese into a smooth mixture before adding the ranch powder. We’d also pair the baby carrots with pretzels. Boom—a deliciously filling, savory snack.
As for a sweet bite? She says she loved the mini Snickers on the Trash Mountain set—so we’d recommend that Deschanel try our Snickers-Inspired Overnight Oats, which can help shake up any breakfast routine (and add some sweetness to your mornings).
