7 Supplements to Help Lower Your Fever Naturally

Certain supplements may boost immune function and naturally lower a fever. Supplements to reduce fever include zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A and D. 

1. Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral that may shorten the duration of a fever. Taking zinc may help alleviate symptoms, including fever, in respiratory infections such as colds and the flu. Zinc has both antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Individuals with a zinc deficiency are more susceptible to respiratory infections. 

Zinc is available as an oral supplement or intranasal spray. Do not use zinc nasal spray because it may cause serious side effects, including a loss of the sense of smell. Most adults can safely take up to 40 milligrams (mg) of zinc daily. Taking high doses of zinc may cause;

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Cramping
  • Headaches 

Zinc supplements may interact with some antibiotics. If you require an antibiotic to treat an infection, do not take zinc without talking with a healthcare provider or pharmacist first. 

2. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for immune function and bone health. It helps the body fight infection and may prevent certain autoimmune conditions.

Vitamin D may help reduce a fever during an infection due to its modulating effects on the immune system. The body needs vitamin D to produce T-cells, immune cells that regulate the immune system and prevent it from overreacting. This can help to reduce inflammation and treat a fever. 

Vitamin C is a standard treatment for colds, but it does not treat a fever. There is insufficient evidence to determine whether vitamin C is an effective treatment for upper respiratory infections. 

3. Probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that support gut health by improving the balance of microorganisms and “good” bacteria in the digestive tract. Probiotics support immune health by reducing inflammation in the gut. Probiotics are available as supplements, and are found in fermented foods, including:

  • Yogurt
  • Kimchi
  • Sauerkraut
  • Kefir
  • Kombucha

Taking a probiotic supplement may help reduce the severity and duration of symptoms in upper respiratory infections, including COVID-19. Research shows that taking probiotics can improve a fever, as well as headaches and muscle aches, in people with COVID-19. 

4. Elderberry

Elderberries are dark purple berries that are available as a supplement. Research shows that taking an elderberry supplement may reduce the duration of a cold or the flu. Elderberry contains plant compounds with antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. 

One study found that taking an elderberry supplement during a cold can help reduce the severity of fever, congestion, cough, and pain. It can also shorten the duration of a fever. 

5. Vitamin A

Vitamin A is an essential nutrient that supports vision and immune health. Vitamin A may reduce the duration of an upper respiratory infection. It has been associated with a shorter duration of respiratory symptoms, including fever and cough. 

People with a vitamin A deficiency are at a higher risk of respiratory infections. It is important to note that a vitamin A deficiency is rare in the United States. 

6. Andrographis

Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) is a plant from Southeast Asia that is available as a supplement. It has antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects.

Research shows that taking andrographis may reduce the duration of a fever and other symptoms associated with upper respiratory infections. It may also alleviate symptoms such as cough, sore throat, headache, and runny nose. 

7. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fat that offers numerous health benefits. These fats are essential for immune function and heart health.

Research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and may treat a fever in people with respiratory infections. 

Talk with your healthcare provider before starting a new supplement when you have a fever. It is important to determine the cause of your fever, as you may require medical treatment. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Advil (ibuprofen), are more effective at treating a fever than supplements.
