Maintaining optimum brain health helps us function well throughout our lifetime. Often, the principles that promote overall health also benefit brain health.
However, one of the most underrated habits for brain health is cognitive stimulation: intentionally engaging in activities that challenge your brain.
The brain is responsible for all bodily functions, including memory, executive function, attention, language, perception, and social-emotional skills. Activities that challenge these functions can help promote neuroplasticity (the ability to form new connections between brain cells) and build cognitive reserve (the flexibility and efficiency of the brain’s networks) over time.
Some cognitive stimulation activities include:
- Painting
- Neurofeedback training
- Tai chi
- Tennis
- Word puzzles
I recommend treating your cognitive and brain health similarly to your physical health. I like to think that we are all “cognitive athletes.” We are so reliant on our brain function, and it is essential to take care of it.
It is harder to reverse cognitive decline than it is to prevent it, so the earlier you take action, the better. Get your physical exams, optimize your blood markers, and make sure your brain is constantly being challenged.
